Ottobre 4/2014

Ottobre – 4-2014 #16 Mushroom Jersey Top

Things I Learned

  • Pockets – I had never done welt pockets before and struggled so much trying to understand the Ottobre instructions.  I finally decided to take some scrap fabric and do a test.  It really helped me and made a couple mistakes on it that I was able to do correctly for the real shirt.
  • Flatlock stitching – I also hadn’t done flatlock stitching before. I had to practice a bit on before attempting it on this shirt. I’m happy with the results! Kind of a neat effect. I was worried about the stitches being too loose and coming undone over time, but it has survived a lot of washes.

This shirt was pictured on a boy in the magazine, but I think it looks great as a girl’s shirt as well.

Ottobre – 1-2014 #14 Lime Lemon Jersey Dress

Lime Lemon Jersey Dress as a Princess Leia costume!

Things I Learned

  • Modifications – This was my first time doing any type of pattern design modifications.  Previously I had only lengthened a shirt or shorted sleeves a couple inches.  For this dress, I lengthened the dress quite a bit and changed the shape of the sleeves in order to resemble Princess Leia’s dress.  Surprisingly, my mods worked out great on the first attempt.  🙂
  • Creativity – I loved the creativity with this project.  I found the tutorial for the belt online and was happy it turned out great as well.

I was very impressed with how this turned out!  Especially since it was my first time doing something like this.  🙂

Ottobre 3/2014

Ottobre – 3-2014 #28 Maxidots Sleeveless Top

Things I Learned

  • Refashion – I wanted to try refashioning one of my old shirts into something for my daughter. I had JUST enough fabric to make this tank. In fact, I was a little short for the main shirt pieces, so I had to improvise and cutout separate shoulder yokes and figure out how to add them in to the existing pattern.  The yokes are actually two different rectangles each, which looks a little strange.  If I did it again I would make them each one rectangle.
  • Gathered neckline – My gathers look a little off-center.  😦

Ottobre – 6-2013 #21 Cap Sleeve Pinafore Dress

Things I Learned

  • Cutting out fabric – I was just so excited to be starting this project that I didn’t realize how the pieces were going to need to be lined up until I had already cut some of them out. Surprisingly I was able to line up the rows of hearts & monkeys pretty well, however, looking at it now I see how the rows look skewed. It’s possible that this type of fabric design wasn’t made for this type of dress. The front and back of the dress are made out of 4 different panels. Next time I might use some solid colors to play up the different panels.
  • Lining – This was my first time lining a dress so I came across a couple terms I didn’t know of.  Had to search for some online tutorials.  I remember thinking “how in the world is this going to work out?”, but it did!
  • Zipper – Oh, the invisible zipper…  My first time doing this as well.  I had to install it and take it out again a few times…  It turned out ok, just a little wonky at the top.  It was functional, though!
  • Pockets – The faux pockets turned out cute!  (Also easier than real pockets!)

I really think this is a sweet, classic design.  I will definitely make this for my daughter again.
